4+1 tips that can save you hundreds of thousands of forints in 2026

Language-exam refunds, free driving theory, discounted travel passes, housing support and a career-starter benefit — 4+1 opportunities that can save you a lot as a young person.

On the road from secondary school to your first job, you may encounter many costs that can easily cause difficulties. Whether it’s getting your driving licence, housing or everyday living — we have gathered4+1 forms of support, with which, as a student or career-starter, you can save on the order of hundreds of thousands of forints in 2026.

1. Language skills are invaluable

As a young person under 35, you can get back the fee for your first successful intermediate, advanced or vocational language exam, as well as the advanced-level foreign-language school-leaving exam,as a young person under 35up to 25% of the current minimum wage — in 2026 that isHUF 80,700. The goal is for as many young people as possible to have documented language skills.

2. Free driving theory and first aid for final-year students

As a final-year secondary-school student you can obtain a category ‘B’ licence at a lower cost. Applications start in the KRÉTA system, where you can complete the driving-theory and first-aid courses online, then take the exam online organised by your school — all of itfree of charge. From 2025 the state covers the cost of the medical fitness examination.

3. Discounted travel

As a young person under 25a 50% discountyou get on rail and intercity bus tickets. As a full-time student the discounted national pass isHUF 1,890a month (instead of 18,900), the county pass is 945 forint. With regular commuting you can thus save up toHUF 150,000a year.

4. Nearly two million forints of housing support a year under 35

From 1 January 2025 your employer can provide up toHUF 150,000of housing support a month if you have not yet turned 35. This benefit, taxed more favourably than wages, can be used for rent or loan repayment.

+1. One-off career-starter benefit

Every student who passes a vocational exam is entitled to a one-off career-starter benefit, the amount of which, depending on the exam result, ranges betweenHUF 133,000 and 302,000, and can be used freely.
